Community Living Philosophy

Ernest Boyer indentified Six Principles for “Campus life in search of Community” that encourage us to establish our campus environment as a community of learns. The Six Principles relate to the philosophy of community living in the Housing & Residence Life residential experience. The Six Principles are:

  • A college or university is an educationally purposeful community - we will work together to strengthen the community!
  • A college or university is a just community - the dignity of others if affirmed, and we celebrate the Chicago State University code of excellence.
  • A college or university is an open community - freedom of expression is celebrated and welcomed and civility is affirmed
  • A college or university is a disciplined community - individuals accept responsibility for their actions and obligations to the group A college or university is a caring community - the well-being of members of the community is supported and services to further develop and support identified and encouraged
  • A college or university is a celebrative community - the heritage of our community will be celebrated and reaffirmed through traditions and campus rituals that mark the student progress to degree completion

A: Yes! We welcome the opportunities for friends to be roommates.
A: No. The Residence Hall is a suite style traditional layout with a room with furniture, no-kitchenette facility.
A: No. However, fish that can survive in a gallon aquarium tank are permitted.
A: Yes. All residential students must maintain a GPA of at least a 2.0.
A: Yes. All students residing in the Residence Hall must have a meal plan.
A: Early Arrivals will only be permitted with permission. There is a charge for approved early arrivals. No exceptions will be made to this policy.
A: Online. Upon move in, all residents will have access to a student handbook that outlines the policies and procedures for community living. Also the mandatory floor meetings will also provide students an opportunity to learn about the policies of the residence hall. 
A: Yes the campus requires all residential students, student athletes, and students with in-person classes to be vaccinated.
